Doug Penhall

Penhall, once we get to see past his initial bluntness, is the sweetheart of the bunch, the most dedicated and the most decent person we meet on the show. He’s been a big guy all his life, a football player who was never the best student in the class. His close friendship with Tom Hanson forms the backbone of the show and much of its humor, as well as many of its more poignant moments as these two very different men work together and become best friends. Doug’s a lovable guy who won’t or can’t manage to clean up after himself, he likes to gamble (#57 "Say It Ain't So, Pete"), and he’s capable of violence for a good cause. Intensely loyal and fierce about defending his friends, Doug is the life of the party, always joking and clowning around, loud and optimistic, but underneath it all lies a quiet sadness and realism that comes from his past. His mother committed suicide when he was 6, his father who drank himself to death, and his younger brother, Joey, ran off at age 15 and left him to take care of his father and deal with it all. He doesn't forgive easily, as we see when he decides Booker is the enemy after Hanson's arrest (#55 & 56 "Loc'd Out 2" and "Draw The Line"). Penhall's capable of real patience but can just as easily get impatient and pound his fist into a wall. He tries to be a good boyfriend to Dorothy (season 3), but it doesn't work, and when he meets Marta, he realizes that she is the love of his life and marries her almost immediately (#59 "Come From The Shadows"). His graveside scene when he says goodbye to Marta is probably the most heartstoppingly sad moment of the entire series (#74 La Bizca). After he gets back home with his new adopted son, Clavo, we see a whole new side to Doug - the patient, caring and protective father. Crime offends Doug deep inside, and he focuses on his work, trying to do good. After four seasons of getting to know this man and his basic decency, his immediate refusal (#87 "Brothers) to get to know Joey, his younger brother, is shocking, making us realize without having to be told just how painfully hard Doug's life was after Joey ran away. He gradually accepts Joey, even though he quits the force and leaves town after almost getting killed (#91 "Number One With A Bullet").

Peter DeLuise

Peter DeLuise inherited his father's love of comedy, and a lot of Dom shines through in the character of Doug Penhall. His first TV appearance was at age 1 in a skit on his father's television show. His first movie was "Hot Stuff," in 1979. A football star at Palisades High School, Peter also worked at an ice cream shop and delivered flowers when his father insisted that he make his own money and learn to rely on himself. Peter has made many movies, both before and after 21 Jump Street, including starring roles in "Listen To Me," "Children of the Night" and "Solar Babies." He has had guest roles on "Highlander," "Facts of Life," "Friends" and many more, as well as a starring role on "Seaquest DSV" as Dagwood. Peter often acts in projects with Michael or Dom, and a collaboration with Michael, "Between the Sheets," will be released in 1998. Teaching acting classes in Los Angeles, as well as directing (including some episodes of "Silk Stalkings" and "21 Jump Street") have filled up Peter’s time between films. After a relationship lasting several years with Gina Nemo (she played Penhall's fiancee, Dorothy), he married her, but they are divorced now). Peter has completed filming a movie called "Storm Of The Heart" in Texas with Randy Travis. In the spring of 1998 he was in Alabama directing a movie called "Southern Heart." Look for Peter in the acting and directing credits of several different shows.
