21 Jump Street: Continuing Storylines

To me, what makes a show really good is if you can sit down and watch, get interested in the characters, and follow them through continuing storylines as they go through life. When TPTB pay attention to this, a show becomes more than good, it becomes something the viewers can become attached to. With a small cast like this, it was easy for them to create lives outside of the workplace, but more importantly they usually showed the effects of things that had happened to the characters, as well as the changes they went through.
For the most part, 21 Jump Street's writers & producers did a great job at this. Below are listed some of the recurring themes and storylines that added to the character/storyline continuity & viewer enjoyment. The titles are linked to pages about each individual episode. Be sure to also visit the

Hanson's First Jump Street Case Returns To Haunt Him Twice
#1 & #2 "21 Jump Street" (
Part 1 and Part 2) - Hanson arrests Waxer, who is blackmailing Kenny.#22 "You Oughta Be In Prison" - The former blackmailer, Waxer, recognizes Hanson and kidnaps him and a movie star in revenge for being busted previously.
#28 "I'm OK, You Need Work" - Kenny makes abuse allegations in a teen psych ward and Hanson, feeling responsible, places himself undercover to investigate, becoming trapped for real
Another of Hanson's Cases Returns To Haunt Him
#15/16 "Besieged"
(Part 1 and Part 2) - Hanson tries to bust Ronnie, without success, for selling drugs#71 "2245" Hanson asks Ronnie, who has been caught, to appear in a video and instead ends up witnessing his execution
Ioki's Past And Escape From Vietnam
#15 "Besieged" (Part 1) - The police department declares Ioki non-existent and his accounts disappear
#24 "Christmas in Saigon" Ioki reveals his true identity as a Vietnamese refugee
#43 "Dragon and the Angel" - Ioki struggles with loneliness as he feels closeness to a Vietnamese street gang
Booker's Redemption
#36 "Fun With Animals" - Booker joins Jump Street and immediately alienates Hanson
#49 "Nemesis" - Booker keeps silent after another kid is fingered as the group narc and killed
#53 "Next Victim" - Booker's friendship with Hoffs almost ends over a racist undercover role he plays

#44 "Swallowed Alive" - Hanson, after being undercover in a juvenile center, begins to question his career choice
#56 "Draw The Line" - Hanson begins to pity the naive kid he once was in the police academy
#71 "2245" Hanson attends, and cries at, the execution of a criminal that he had been trying to arrest for years
#82 "Tunnel of Love" (beginning of Season 5) - Hanson is no longer at Jump Street
Doug & Joey Penhall/Peter & Michael DeLuise
#84 "Buddy System" - Doug Penhall mentions having a younger brother with whom he does not get along.
#87 "Brothers" - After a nasty reunion, Doug rescues Joey from a cult he has joined
#91 "Number One With A Bullet" Doug decides to give up police work and leaves for Philadelphia, leaving Joey behind
#97 "Cop Love" - Joey asks for vacation time to visit Doug (and never returns)
Hanson & His Girlfriends
#4 "Don't Pet The Teacher" Hanson meets a teacher in his undercover assignment and they date after the case ends
#23 "How Much Is That Body In The Window?" Hanson gets together with Amy Pearson, who turns down his application to be a Big Brother
#25 - "Fear & Loathing With Russell Buckins" - Hanson visits an ex-girlfriend, Debbie, right before her wedding
#29 "Orpheus 3.3" - Amy is killed in a convenience store robbery, setting off an obsession in Hanson, who had been ready to break up
#38 "The Currency We Trade In" - Hanson meets Jackie Garrett, an assistant to a city district attorney (later mayor).
#50 "Fathers And Sons" Hanson catches on that she has started reporting back to her boss and dumps her immediately.
#58 "Eternal Flame" - Hanson's meets his ex-girlfriend, Linda, now married to a criminal. He makes love to her and almost quits police work, but she wants her independence and leaves town

#6 "Worst Night Of Your Life" - Doug gets robbed by a woman and learns not to lie when meeting women
#26 "A Big Disease With A Little Name" - Dorothy, Doug's ex-girlfriend, shows up and moves back in with him
#43 "Blu Flu" - While Doug's on strike, he arrests Dorothy's cocaine-snorting boss at a party
#45 "What About Love?" - Dorothy kicks Doug out of the house and breaks up with him
#46 "Woolly Bullies" - Doug reminisces about a crush he had on a cheerleader in high school
#50 "Fathers & Sons" - Ioki kicks Doug out and, after several funny mishaps, he decides to go talk to Dorothy - but she's gone

#74 "La Bizca" -Hanson & Penhall go to El Salvador, are captured and tortured, find Marta has been killed, and return with Clavo

#79 "Rounding Third" Penhall coaches a baseball team and finds a missing boy who befriends Clavo
#80 "Everyday Is Christmas" - Penhall's neglect of duty in favor of Clavo nets him a dangerous IAD assignment
#91 "Number One With A Bullet" - Doug decides to leave police work to take care of Clavo after being shot
