Commentary:

Cyndi Glass: Very subtle stuff in this, especially the undercover roles that Penhall and Hanson played. It seemed to have much more to do with DeLuise and Depp than it did with Penhall and Hanson. I can see it reversed much more easily based on the actors’ movie careers (Depp playing the effeminate and picked on student and DeLuise playing a big homophobic jerk), but seeing it played out the opposite way gives it more effectiveness. Seeing DeLuise’s subtle touches, like wrapping his towel around his chest like a girl and using baby shampoo, we are also treated to Depp playing a cocky smart-ass jerk - a jerk who is much more lifelike and real, right down to an accent straight out of Depp’s family’s hometown of Owensboro, KY (though he was supposed to be from Oklahoma). We get the sense that Penhall might not have allowed himself to be as mean to Hanson as the role required. Unlike episode #81 "Blackout," where I feel that Hanson and Penhall were unnecessarily cruel to each other, "Honor Bound" seems carefully crafted. The violence and cruelty is part of the roles they are playing - and in "real life," when no one is around, Hanson and Penhall revert to their normal close friendship, shifting their body language and tone of voice to mark the change in mood. In "Blackout" where everything had already gone to hell and the students knew they were cops, they STILL acted strangely. Seeing Hanson in the flannel shirt and baseball cap and using that accent, it was really eerie to think of how Depp’s life might have turned out if he had grown up in Kentucky and remained there as an adult.
