Commentary:
Cyndi Glass: I do love this episode. Finally, the last of Dorothy. I really liked it that it came right after #44 "Swallowed Alive" - the comedic effect of Penhall walking around in the rain to the "Odd Couple" theme was relaxing and reassuring, after such a harrowing episode. The first place he goes, of course, is to Hanson’s, and even his best friend and partner knows better than to live with him. Booker, of course, has an anonymous girl over and doesn’t have any room. Sal’s house is full of kids who throw spaghetti at him and are generally obnoxious. He finally ends up at Ioki’s house, still bearing spaghetti, and Ioki takes him in - and immediately we see the problem - Penhall’s a gregarious slob like Oscar, while Ioki, like Felix, is tidy and quiet. And that scene with Ioki in drag - poor Ioki. You'd think they could have gotten him a BLACK wig. Great comic dialogue with Ioki and Penhall arguing about chores and stuff, just like Dorothy and Penhall.
And that's just the subplot. The main plot, involving Hoffs and yet another bad boyfriend, is intense enough to carry a whole episode and proves that Hoffs is not to be trifled with. We also see Jackie's willingness to fight for Hoffs, Hoffs' dedication to her job, and one more stake driven through the heart of her naivete. For a moment there, I thought Penhall was going to go after the guy! Wish he would have.
John DeCarli: After the unrelieved grimness of "Swallowed Alive" that Odd Couple scene is a relief. And it’s funny. I noticed Hanson was holding a large (wooden?) duck when he talked to Penhall at the door - an inside joke? They really need to change that stock exterior shot they used about five minutes in. It still shows Hoffs’ old green car. I think she got the red Jetta at the beginning of Season 2, didn’t she?
