Commentary:
Cyndi Glass: Definitely one of my favorite episodes. Whoever cast these kids did such a remarkable job. Only a couple of problems here - after watching Season 5 we have to disregard Penhall moving in with his uncle at such a young age (and having no little brother named Joey), and Penhall’s high school dance using BeeGee’s music just like Hanson’s in "Chapel of Love" when neither of them were in high school in the mid-late 70’s. Beyond that, it’s such an entertaining episode with a great script, wonderful acting and perfect characterization. The beginning is hysterical as Penhall plays a wanna-be computer nerd. My only complaint here is that Hoffs and Ioki, once again, are left out. When we hear Fuller’s story, it’s easy to see how Fuller became a cop, and it’s really easy as well to see how Sal (great touch - the Stray Cats shirt!) became what he is today. The Booker story was classic Booker, too - he could never be the bullied one, he’d have to be the bully. The Hanson story was well-done, giving us clues into his complicated attitudes about women (and charmingly acted by two of the cutest twins I’ve seen - they really had him down!). The capper, though, was the Penhall story - told in two different flashback sequences. The first one, with Penhall at around age 10, was just superb. You could really SEE this kid as Doug Penhall, and any scene with Dom DeLuise is priceless. And what a stroke of brilliance it was to cast Peter DeLuise’s younger brother, Michael, as a younger Doug Penhall. From the first time we see him, in class, sitting in front of the bully - yelping his outrage over being stabbed in the leg - and then that slow turn so we can see his brown eyes, hair and face - it just IS Penhall, right down to his crooked smile at the drinking fountain, the crazy dancing he does while getting ready for the prom, the seemingly ad-libbed scene ("You have a good time." "She’s not that kind of a girl, Dad") with Dom, and the anguish Doug felt when the bully took his car. It’s Michael playing Peter playing Penhall, and the result is superb. I love the ending, as well - Penhall going to confront the bully of his childhood - and walking away, laughing at how much better his life has turned out than the bully’s. Fantastic. Peter DeLuise is such a jewel in this cast. Imagine if, in addition to them hiring Michael to play Doug Penhall, they had hired David DeLuise to play JOEY Penhall - Doug’s little brother when he was in high school!
John DeCarli: This reminds me a lot of "Chapel of Love" except that it never turns as tragic as that one. I bet they had a lot of fun filming the DeLuise boys together! Some of those scenes do look a little improvised. The young actors have certainly been matched well with their older counterparts. Was there an outtake or two shown over the closing credits?
