Commentary:
Cyndi Glass: It’s very rare for a lead actress in any show to be the victim of rape, and only a lead actress can educate audiences so effectively. The audience knows Judy Hoffs and cares about her, and we want to see her rapist brought to justice. Some very important mistakes are made by Judy when she fails to report the incident right away, throws away her clothes and takes a shower - but it’s completely understandable. It seems completely right that she would go to Hanson for help, and though she is initially dishonest with him and covers up what happened, she finally feels safe enough to take off her clothes and dissolve into tears in the safety of Hanson’s shower. Her jittery behavior is so unlike her normal warm and natural self, and it’s Hanson who notices - Hanson who asks her to dance and is the first one she confides in - Hanson who makes sure she is okay before he leaves her alone at the end to confront Evan. But this is Hoffs’ story, and it’s a riveting performance by Holly Robinson. Even more cool is the fact that this one incident was allowed to reverberate throughout some of the remaining episodes - it makes her nervous in #76 "Unfinished Business," and it makes her fight for Terry in #93 "The Education of Terry Carver."
