Tony "Mac" McCann

Tony McCann does not make a great impression the first day he walks in the door at Jump Street (#84 "Buddy System"). Cocky and insulting to Hoffs and (Doug) Penhall, he definitely makes me agree with Hoffs when she enigmatically refers to him as "a little prickly." Over the course of the season, however, he wins me over. Mac, as he likes to be called, drives fast, lives in a run down apartment in a bad section of town (unlike Penhall and Hoffs, who live in nice homes) and has a past he would like to outrun, back in Newark, NJ, where he was on the police force and was set up to be killed. When Penhall just won't take his crap and refuses to be intimidated, Mac learns that Penhall can be a valuable friend and partner. The more of Mac we see, the more we understand that though he has this standoffish exterior, he is perhaps the biggest softie of them all, affected so much by his cases that he tries to quit them sometimes. He's idealistic but rough around the edges - he acts like a know it all but is practically glued to "Cap'n" Fuller's side, asking and giving advice, joking around and sharing his theories. After Doug quits and Joey is fully integrated into the unit, Mac is often partnered with Joey in cases reminiscent of the old Hanson/Penhall plots from the first two seasons. It is in #96 "In The Name of Love," that we really get inside Mac's head, as we not only meet his ex-fiancee, Samantha, but we see his pain when she leaves him again and as he has to lie to her and keep his case confidential. We see his guilt over lying to the girl that the FBI has ordered him to seduce, which he can't bring himself to do, and we get to see his apartment, which isn’t nearly as nice as everyone else’s. Mac is, in the end, a great guy and a dedicated friend.
