Dean Garrett

Officer Dean Garrett didn't last very long, only three episodes, all of which were filmed during Season 4 (the last two were held back and broadcast in Season 5, so he is usually credited only with Season 5 appearances). In episode #80 "Everyday Is Christmas," a brand new rookie is joining a corrupt precinct at the same time that Penhall has been assigned there as an I.A.D. plant. Dean is 21 but looks 16. When Penhall appears to be going along with the extortion, Garrett confronts him, telling him angrily that he joined the police force to protect and serve. He blames his disillusionment on Penhall, who has no way of telling him that it's all an investigation and not true. Finally, the case is solved and Penhall goes back to Jump Street, taking the naïve Garrett with him. In episode #82 "Tunnel of Love," Hoffs and Garrett investigate a massage parlor and run into Agent Rocky, who also becomes a Jump Street officer, and in episode #83, Garrett and Rocky are planted in a high school to solve a case. Still, in only three episodes, we find out a lot. He's from Moonachie, NJ, where he worked for a ticket scalper at the Meadowlands. He's fresh out of the academy, where he got low-average scores but was considered "razor sharp." After graduating from the academy, he got six weeks off to take care of a family problem - what he did was search for his biological family, which he found and was disappointed in. Garrett has a younger brother who shows up and their violent confrontation was promising, but never followed up on (and we believe it gave the writers the idea to bring on Joey Penhall). He's a idealistic guy who probably would have been a promising addition to a Fox Season 5 cast to replace Doug Penhall.
