#13 "Mean Streets & Pastel Houses" (Season 1 #13)

Original Air Date: June 28, 1987

Writer: Jonathan Lemkin

Director: James Whitmore, Jr.

Production Code: 16101

Things To Note: Robbie Fields says "All of the Agent Orange music in the Mean Streets episode, Johnny Depp as Sid Vicious. I was the studio producer, owner of the label that licensed and music publisher of all the music used. Johnny infiltrates the KKK, the Klean Kut Kids gang. As you know, "Mean Streets" was one of the first episodes shot but was shown as the (first) season finale. However, Frederic Forrest has already been replaced by Steven Williams which makes me think that a few of the early episodes had scenes re-shot, in order to excise Forrest." Scenes from this were also used in #70 "Back From The Future."

Commentary:

John DeCarli: A lot of the fun in this season one finale comes from watching straight arrow Hanson don punk rock clothes and then infiltrate a concert (complete with Slam Dancing). I really like the abruptness of the plot- one minute everyone's playing football, the next minute Hanson picks a fight to keep a motorcycle cop from being decapitated. These rapid transitions help create a lot of the edginess here. My only quibble is that Fuller seems to go along with whatever Hanson suggests just a little too easily. A powerful final scene: Brian, who prevented a gang war, is the only one who gets arrested for the death of the "neighbor." Ironic- and yep, it takes place in front of a Rocket Dog!
