Commentary:

Cyndi Glass: One of the absolute best episodes of 21JS. According to the episode numbers, this one was filmed first, with #73 "Awomp" produced later in order to set up the episode. They even filmed a few episodes in between - so it looks like they got to go to Florida twice. Although in this episode there is a different little boy playing Clavo, I am glad to see the beginning of the Clavo/Penhall storyline. It explains so much about how Penhall became responsible for this little boy and how his promise to Marta at her graveside to take care of him and raise him as if he were their own could compel him to quit police work in Season 5. My favorite scenes are the graveside scene, where Hanson and the rest of Marta’s family stand far back to let Penhall have a moment alone to say goodbye to Marta (DeLuise’s acting in this scene is phenomenally heartbreaking), the scene where the American federal agent wakes them up and offers to take them to the village (Penhall is so funny, waking up from what is obviously a bad dream about Fuller’s reaction to this trip and yelling "Hanson wanted the rental car!"), and the scene where the guards throw Hanson into the cell after being tortured and Penhall protects him and silently lifts his head to push some straw underneath to cushion it. The blocking of the next cell scene, with the smaller Hanson protected between Penhall and the wall, speaks volumes about Penhall’s determination to keep Hanson from harm on what is, after all, a volunteer mission on Penhall’s behalf. The most sobering part of this episode is the realization that TPTB placed it in a real country, in a very real plotline, with a situation that was actually going on at the time.
