Judy Hoffs

Judith Marie Hoffs was the most educated officer, having gone to college, and she was also the only one to get promoted to detective rank. She had a soft innocence and flirty demeanor that by Season 5 had turned into compassion, strength and a resigned cynicism about some things - she had just seen too much. She’s a compassionate friend and isn’t averse to going beyond the call of duty when she feels passionately about a case. Judy gets personally involved in her cases, consoling girls who have been hurt, even if they are the criminals. Many of Judy’s cases spring from events that happen to her personally, such as when she was raped (#63 "Stand By Your Man") when she witnessed police harassment of African American teens(#92 "Equal Protection") and when she was sexually harassed (#45 "What About Love?"). She comforts Hanson when his girlfriend is murdered, and it is Hanson she turns to and confides in after she has been raped. She comes close to having a romance with Penhall, but they decide to just be friends. She is sent out on the most challenging cases, fending off a kiss from a gay female student (#69 "A Change of Heart") and investigating one case in a wheelchair (#76 "Unfinished Business). Judy has worked hard to get where she is and overcome prejudice, and she fights to stay there no matter what it takes, earning the respect of her fellow officers with her brains and experience. Toward the end of the series, she has become more jaded and wise, not always letting her compassion get in the way of her experience, as Joey and Mac still do. Still, she falls for a guy full of stories and lies who has an ex-wife from hell in #99 "Crossfire." Hoffs wants to believe, trust and fall in love, but she is usually disappointed, and her experience doesn’t allow her to have any illusions for long. She is probably Captain Fuller's closest friend among the officers, and they sometimes eat together, but they don't date. By the end of the series, she knows him better than anyone, and he actually listens to her when she thinks he is getting out of control (#101 "Bad Day At Blackburn.") We don’t learn much about Judy’s family or past; it seems that we are supposed to know her in the present, what she has made of herself. The first show of Season 2 has a subplot about Judy's parents, who reconcile during a visit to her home.

Holly Robinson-Peete

Holly joined the 21 Jump Street cast at age 22. She had appeared in "Dummy" (a 1979 TV movie) and"Howard the Duck." During Season 4 of 21 Jump Street, Holly appeared twice on the spin-off series "Booker." After 21 Jump Street, Holly had a small role as Diana Ross in "The Jacksons: An American Dream," a TV movie which has been broadcast often on VH-1. From 1992 to 1997 she starred in the TV series "Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper" as Vanessa Russell. She is married to Philadelphia Eagles football player Rodney Peete and has two children, Rodney Jackson and Ryan Elizabeth. She also currently stars in the WB show "For Your Love," starring as Malena Ellis. There is a VERY nice feature article about her in the April 1998 issue of Ebony, with lots of pictures of her, her husband, and her two children.
